Linux is a Free (as in speech), Open Source Operating System with a wide variety of applications (both software and uses) with a strong community. Many thousands of people around the world help make Linux great and a lot of big (and small) companies are now using, supporting and actively promoting Linux as a great platform to use and be a part of.
If you are interested in learning more about Linux (such as where to get it, how to use it, how to get involed or how to help) a great source is the Linux Australia website and your local user group (check the Linux Australia Linux User Group list if you're in Australia).

This is probably very out of date, but may still be useful.
